Rupture and Repair
Relationships break; then they mend on purpose. This process can be therapeutic.
Description
Ruptures wake protectors up. Repairs deliver corrective experiences. Naming the impact, taking your share, and re-attuning teaches parts that a connection can bend without ending — which is information most exiles do not have.
The finding worth knowing is that ruptures are not the problem. Relationships with no visible rupture tend to be relationships where somebody is managing, and the cost lands on whoever is doing the managing. What predicts safety is not the absence of breaks but the reliability of the mend. A part can relax around someone who gets it wrong and comes back. It cannot relax around someone who is never wrong.
This scales up. Teams and communities do the same thing, and a group whose ruptures never surface is usually a group with a very tidy surface.
What Rupture and Repair is NOT:
Not never fighting, and not instant forgiveness — rushed repair is usually a protector wanting the discomfort to stop. Also not scorekeeping: repair is not payment, and a part being owed something is a different conversation.
Examples:
Naming a misattunement and then doing that bit again, slower.
Apologising without either self-attack or a counter-charge attached.
A debrief after the hard conversation, arranged in advance.
