Spiritual Bypassing

Using “higher” states or beliefs to avoid pain that still needs witnessing.

Description

Coined by John Welwood. Spiritual bypassing is when parts use spirituality to skip the part where something hurts: meditation instead of mourning, forgiveness instead of a boundary, “love and light” instead of grief. It is usually a Self-like protector doing it, which is why it is so hard to catch from the inside. It feels like progress.

Our bias, stated plainly: we think this is the most common failure mode in the contemplative-adjacent scene we move in, ours very much included. The tell is that the calm does not survive contact with anything. Real Self presence can sit in the room with the awful thing; bypassing needs the awful thing to be already resolved.

What Spiritual Bypassing is NOT:

Not actual transcendence. Not the same as Titration either — pacing yourself on purpose is a decision you made, bypassing is a part making it for you.

Examples:

A “zen” part shuts your anger down with “everything happens for a reason.”
You get to gratitude so fast you never find out what you were sad about.
Someone declines therapy because they already processed it in a past life.
