Self
The aspect of you that can be with any of your parts without turning into one of them.
Description
In IFS, Self is the capacity for presence and leadership that never got damaged. It is not perfection and it is not a mood — it is a stance. When Self leads, parts relax, mostly because they feel seen rather than overruled.
This is the piece of the model we are least confident describing, and we notice most writing about it gets luminous very fast. In practice it is unglamorous: you are annoyed, you notice you are annoyed, and there is still someone home who can decide what to do next. That is the whole thing. If it feels blissful, it is worth checking whether you have met a part that does a very good impression.
What Self is NOT:
Not your best self, not an ego ideal, and not a personality type. Also not dissociation — the difference is whether you can still feel the thing you are being calm about.
Examples:
Shame spikes, you greet the part carrying it, and you stay kind anyway.
You negotiate with a procrastinator without contempt.
You hold a boundary and stay in the relationship.
