Blending & Unblending

Blending is being fused with a Part; unblending is stepping back into Self while staying in relationship with it.

Description

Blending means a Part has taken the driver’s seat: you see through its lens. Unblending starts by acknowledging the Part, getting curious about what it feels and believes, and extending Self-energy toward it until there’s just enough space to relate rather than react. The goal isn’t to silence the Part, but to get perspective back.

The most useful detector we have found is the humour meter. Something you could tease your partner about last week is now, RIGHT NOW, deadly serious and absolutely not a joking matter. That shift is diagnostic on the spot. We wrote the long version, sock of destiny included, in The unburdened lightness of partswork.

Not a rule, though. Do not force lightness that isn’t there — “you should find this funny” is usually just another Part talking.

What Blending & Unblending is NOT:

Not dissociation and not suppression. In both of those you stop feeling the thing; unblending means you feel it and are also still there. Also not sterile “objectivity”, which in our experience is often a Part doing an impression of Self while wearing a lab coat.

Examples:

“I notice a critic is here” instead of “I’m awful.”
You pause before replying, notice the anxious Part, and breathe with it.
You cannot find your left sock and are somehow now questioning the entire relationship.
