Description
A titrated imaginal process. You go to the scene, the part gets to show you what happened, and then it is offered protection, a choice, and somewhere else to be. Accuracy matters less than felt repair — the part is not filing a report, it is finding out that somebody finally turned up.
Witnessing is the load-bearing half and it is the half people rush. Being believed is the intervention. A part that has been fully seen frequently needs nothing else from you that day, and trying to move straight to retrieval tends to read as being hurried out of the room.
Retrieval means bringing the part into the present, not into a fantasy. It is not that the past changes; it is that the part stops living there.
What Witnessing & Retrieval is NOT:
Not memory mining, and not a courtroom — you are not establishing what really happened, and if a part’s account is impossible you can still receive what it felt like. Emphatically not re-traumatisation: if you are going back in at full intensity, the pacing is wrong, not the part.
Examples:
Standing next to a child part through the night it has never told anyone about.
Asking, after it has been believed, whether it would like to come to where you live now.
Bringing an adult ally in, if you are not enough on your own that day.
