Vulnerable parts - exiles
Young, possibly hurt parts carrying the original wounds and beliefs.
Description
Exiles hold pain, fear, and conclusions (“I’m unlovable”). They are not weak — they are burdened and alone, which are two different problems needing two different things. With enough safety and actual witnessing, they can reconnect and update.
The name is doing a lot of work here. Exiles are not hiding; they were sent away, generally by protectors who had their reasons at the time. That is why you can’t simply go and fetch one. The parts that did the exiling get a say first.
What Exiles is NOT:
Not permanent helplessness, and not pathology. Also not quite “the inner child”, which tends to arrive as a single lovable figure — you usually have several, they are different ages, and some of them are furious.
Examples:
A six-year-old certainty that rejection is coming.
Grief from years of going unnoticed, showing up in the middle of intimacy.
A frozen belief that anger ends love.
