Self-energy
The felt signal of Self: calm, curiosity, clarity, compassion, confidence, courage, creativity, connectedness.
Description
Self-energy is the felt signal that Self is driving. It is relational rather than performative: less “feeling great”, more “able to stay with what is”. And it is contagious in both directions — more of it in you invites more of it in the room, which is the whole reason facilitation and parts work turn out to be the same skill.
Worth flagging a disagreement inside the IFS world, and inside our own systems: is Self-energy something separate from parts, or do parts hold it too? We lean toward the second, and we are not certain. Nothing in the practice hinges on it, which is part of why the argument continues.
What Self-energy is NOT:
Not toxic positivity, not numbing out, and not certainty. If you are very sure and slightly urgent about it, that is worth a second look — it is usually a Self-like part.
Examples:
Getting curious about an anxious knot instead of flattening it.
Naming a mistake without either crumpling or counterattacking.
Leaving the heated thread alone until you have unblended, then replying.
