Parts (in IFS)
Semi-autonomous subpersonalities with roles and histories. All are welcome, none are the enemy.
Description
Parts carry roles (protector, exile) and burdens (beliefs, feelings, roles nobody reassigned). They have intentions: they are trying to help, with the tools they happen to have. The goal isn’t eviction, it’s renegotiating the role/job description or role under Self leadership.
How literally should you take all this? We are relaxed about it. Whether parts are “really” separate entities or a useful way of describing one mind is a question we have never needed to settle in order to get somewhere, and the practice works either way. Treating them as beings with their own point of view is the part that matters — it is what makes asking them things possible.
Practically: you have more parts than you think, most of them are not a problem, and the ones causing you trouble are a small and noisy minority. It is worth occasionally going looking for the quiet ones instead of waiting for something to go wrong.
What Parts (in IFS) is NOT:
Not DSM diagnoses, and not dissociative identity disorder, which is a different thing with a different clinical picture. Not Jungian archetypes either — an archetype is a shape that recurs across people, a part is specifically yours and has your history.
Examples:
A planner that micromanages so that chaos never arrives.
A rage part that frightens people off before they can get close enough to shame you.
A small, lonely one that is quite sure love is conditional.
