Parts Work
Any approach that treats subpersonalities as real-enough to dialogue with, negotiate, and reassign roles.
Description
The umbrella category. IFS is one member, and a well-organised one, but not the only one: Voice Dialogue, Gestalt chair work, Focusing, Feeding Your Demons out of Tibetan Buddhism, various things in the Western magical tradition that are doing something recognisably similar with different vocabulary. The shared stance is that parts aren’t enemies. They are more like overworked employees. Name them, listen, and renegotiate the role under Self (or at minimum adult) leadership.
We say “parts work” rather than “IFS” fairly often, and it is deliberate. The traditions disagree about metaphysics and about method, and we borrow from several of them. If a technique from somewhere else gets a part heard, we are not going to refuse it on brand grounds.
What Parts Work is NOT:
Not pathologising your quirks, and not forcing “integration” by willpower — which mostly produces a part that has learned to be quiet. Also not a licence: “a part of me did it” is an explanation, not an excuse, and you are still the one who has to make it right.
Examples:
Two chairs, a Critic in one and a Creative in the other.
Journalling a decision as an argument between the parties involved.
Checking in with the Risk Manager before a hard conversation rather than after.
